Boys will be Boys or How not to be a Male Model

Posted in Second Life Fashion, SL, Sl fashion, sl Model, Uncategorized, Worldofsl on June 28, 2009 by RedLexi

I spent the day at the beach recently with 7 beautiful women and two handsome men. While this sounds like the set up for a kinky spring break or a “Dear Penthouse” story…it isn’t.  Sorry to disappoint. It was really just a photo shoot for a new up and coming art photography studio that I do some work for now and then.

Several of the models were new to being in photo shoots and this was to be a learning experience but the ladies took to it quickly and with much grace. The men however…..well…..they were ….ehh…  not so graceful?

It started with the first pose, a huge group shot with everyone in it,all packed in nice and close. We had a line of pose balls to get on and ever single one of the pose balls was called “Hers”.  Now admittedly some of the poses were pretty girly, but others were not and after trying a couple different balls I had one that worked for me. Meanwhile my fellow men were having some serious set backs with this situation.

“I can’t pose on a girl’s ball” stated one.

“I am not posing next to another guy, I am not gay” griped another.

“This makes me look gay.” complained the first  having  apparently risked his manhood by trying a girls ball.

After a few minutes of this, i gave my pose to the one that was sure he looked gay so he would hopefully settle, shut up and let us the photo started. As soon as I took the pose he had left he hollered, “Ha! Now you look gay!” Maybe it was his way of saying thanks?   “Well I am gay so that is fine by me”  I  quipped thus earning  several charming giggles from the girls and at least a few minutes of shocked homophobic silence  from the men. At last a break for the poor photographer to work in. It was too good to last.

“EWwwww Candi just farted on my leg!” says the dark haired hunk who I had swapped poses with. Everyone laughed and LOLed and he took that as approval to continue. He told us how it smelled. He told us how it felt.  He told us he can tell when a girl is pregnant by how her farts smell….and so on….and so on….and so on.

Now gentlemen, let me tell you something about fart humor in mixed company over the age of thirteen. One, just one  _well timed_ fart joke can be very funny, a second one can be a little amusing … sometimes. Get onto three and four fart jokes and people start to wonder just what is wrong with you. More then that most people are just wishing someone somewhere would slap a muzzle on you.  Another thing to note, discussing the tone, fragrence and quality of a woman’s passing of gas, be it real or imagined… is not likely to win the heart of the fair lady.

Now I am not a lady but I do know the sort of things I find charming when said by a man  and I suspect that none of these other amusing comments I heard during the shoot was going to win female hearts either. Smooth lines like…..

“Man you got a nice ass!”

“Hey…lets do this shot with all the girls naked”

“That suit would look better topless.’

Thru all of this, every girl in the group was pleasant, professional and polite even to the men when they were at their silliest and it really was a fun afternoon in front of the cameras.  In the spirit of this post and because I am a guy too after all.. I have to show you one photo from the shoot.

Notice where the hand of the girl beside me is? Maybe it was a “Dear Penthouse” worthy day after all.

Razmataz Fashion Contest

Posted in Second Life, Second Life Fashion, SL, Sl Contest, Sl fashion, sl Model, Uncategorized, Worldofsl with tags , , , , , , on June 27, 2009 by RedLexi

I am a fool for photo contests. I have entered dozens and dozens of them. I think If i was honest with myself, its because I like seeing myself in photos and the contests give me a good excuse to ham and mug for more pictures. I am not a bad looking guy and my photography skills are well honed. I have a good eye for composition and style.  You would think that I would have at least a fair chance at some of these contests.

I have not won a single one yet.

There are so many variables and details, clearly I am not yet a contest master. That or Second Life is just messing with me.
Take my latest effort as an example.

The Razmataz Contest.
“BEST FASHION in BEST SIM SCENERY”

All photos will be viewed by a panel of judges.

Winner will receive free exposure in Maniera Fashion Magazine, as well as a free video taping of their choice and 2 free poses or animations from Razmataz. The owner will even create a custom pose for the winner.

Buy a Razmataz pose, find your favorite scenery spot and take a unedited photo wearing your best designer fashion. Sounds easy….right? The deadline was today and I had just a little free time to play. I forgot for a moment that nothings ever easy, especially on Second Life.

First I went to buy the pose at  Razzmataz Poses
Clearly this is a fairly new pose designer. The shop was small,  strangely laid out and the pose selection was rather limited. To be honest more then a few of them looked awkward or uncomfortable. To be fair though some of the animated ones showed real potential and the prices were extremely reasonable.

There was really nothing there that worked for a guy, at least nothing that quickly jumped out as looking photo worthy. It took some serious imagination but at last I found one I could live with, a basic hand on the hip pose called the Marilyn.  At least I am not terribly uncomfortable using a girls pose. 30 linden and I was out the door, ready to find my location.

I already had a location in mind too. One of the best scenic sims I have ever taken a wander through. Its a stunning place called Forest Feast and in my opinion has some of the most realistic flowers and trees SL has to offer. I found my Landmark, hit it and got the black teleport screen of death. CRASH. *sigh*

So I logged back in to try again. This time I made it in to the Sim and started to wander around, looking for where I wanted my scenic fashion shot. This place is just jaw droppingly beautiful and there were so many possibilities. My time was growing short so I did not allow myself to much time to wander. I got my outfit on, decided what hair to use, picked what skin I liked best for the shot, all those  fussy little choices we models have to make. Then I fiddled until the pose was just right, lined up the shot, adjusted my Wyndlight to have the perfect shadows, lovely sunny lighting and warm skin tones. I was ready to shoot! AND _then_ the sim went down for reset. *Double sigh*

After the sim came back up, I teleport back in and went  through all of that again. This had taken an hour longer then I had intended to give it and I didn’t even have a photo to show for it yet. Normally I will take 20-30 photos and then pick the best one. I no longer had the time to do that. Real Life was starting to get impatient with me. I took one shot and call it done. Errr…wait. When did that couple sneak into the woods over there?! I had been so busy looking at myself I had utterly failed to notice the rather “loving” couple having a moment in woods directly behind me until I looked at the photo in photoshop. SO…a few more adjustments, a bit more grumbles from RL and time for only one more shot. This time it was perfect..or at least as good as it was going to get for this contest.

And yes….I blinked.

Affair with Hair

Posted in Second Life, Second Life Fashion, SL, Sl fashion, sl Model, Uncategorized, Worldofsl with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 23, 2009 by RedLexi

Anyone that knows me at all well knows that The Lex is obsessed with hair.  Any slim pretty faced AV with long dark, flowing hair is going to make me look and if that lovely happens to be a pretty dark haired boi , I am going to look again, turn around,  follow and possibly even break out the camera. I  freely admit it, I have a long  hair fetish. When Genie wears that waist length black hair of his and the tiger stripe tattoos I am just ready to …umm…….. err… well… I digress. Suffice to say I _really_ have a thing about hair.

When it comes to my own hair, it has to be red. Always red. If I have a choice, it should also be long. The search is always ongoing for the perfect long red hair. The Holy Grail of hairs, the one I will buy and wear forever and never need to  change it again. Every time I think I find it  though, something better comes along. I was here on Second Life BEFORE flexi prims and let me tell you, when flexi hair came out I spent me some serious lindens. Then I took up modeling and had to get a varied selection of short red hair. I started to like how the short hair looked on me.  More Lindens. After three years my collection of red hair is epic and yet there is always room for more.

This is exactly why I fully intended to stay far, far away from the 2009 Hair Fair. I have many many hairs already and only a few Linden to my name. I knew if  went to the fair it was going to just be More hair and No linden by the time I left.  Then I got talking with Nic about the Hair Fair going on right now.  Nic is a stunningly lovely fellow with quite a hair collection of his own and every bit of it is long, black and lush and  _My Gods_  he is just way to easy on the eyes!  I remember  the first time I saw him I just about …… err…..ummm…. I am starting to digress again. Did I mention I have a thing about men with long dark hair?

Anyway, talking with Nic made me realize that going to the Hair Fair and writing about my time there would be the perfect opening post for this blog. Hair has always been my main thing after all so what better place to start?  So after all the serious plans I had made to NOT go, suddenly and impulsively I was eager to be there!  I could hardly wait!  Hair! Glorious Hair!  I got dressed, found the land mark for the Fair and Teleported myself  in!!  Or….not.

The Sim is full.

30 minutes later I was _still_ hitting the teleport button and still getting the “Sim is Full. Try again soon.” message. A great deal of the excitement and enthusiasm had waned now and the stubborn red head temperament had taken over. I was going to get there. I was going to get there dang it. Push the button. Push the Button. Push. Push. Button. Button. WHOOSH

I made it in!

Snapshot_006

The entire place is made out of candy. Chocolate, sugar and cake  was everywhere I looked.  My arrival  landed  me on a chocolate chip cookie the size of a football field.  Sweets just so happen to be another of my grand obsessions.  My mouth was watering and I had not even seen any long haired boys yet. I  knew right then, this first blog post was going to be the length of a novel.

So the hair fair stare began in ernest but as I went from one candy themed store to the next, I found that I was distracted from the vast sleection inside the shops. The colorful and edible shops were outshining the items they sold. They were so charming, like something right out of a fairy tale and they simply cried out to be  photographed.

Everyone gripes about lag so I will spare you the grim details, things like when I  got stuck  jittering between sims because the one I was going to was full and the one I was leaving filled up.  The lag at the hair fair was beyond impressive but i find that  if you keep  a open mind  Lag can be entertaining and perhaps a bit disturbing. For proof I offer  you this photo of  the “Lag Ghost Goiter Girl” and her boyfriend “Laughing  Lag  Ghost” (I also find it funny that laughing boy’s shoulders are almost as wide as the girl’s entire torso, but that is a whole post for a different day)

Snapshot_010

Still in the end I got tired of fighting the beast of lag and took myself home after I had seen just over half of the fair. Its huge and its laggy. If you go be ready to make a day of it. You need not pack a lunch, you can just nibble on the shops. Once I got home however,  I had the surprise of the week, I had not bought a single thing!!!  I had grabbed dozens of demos to try on, but for the most part my wallet was not at all dented and I had a delightful time.

Here are some of the  hairy highlights of the trip.
